Keeping Hampton safe is a shared effort. Here’s how HUPD helps, and how you can help too.
A shared responsibility
Preventing crime is a joint effort between the Hampton University community and University Police. HUPD holds safety seminars throughout the year to help you become more security conscious, and proactive measures are in place across campus.
Reporting suspicious activity and vandalism, and protecting yourself and your belongings, are some of the simplest ways to keep campus safe.
How to use an emergency call box
Emergency call boxes ring directly into Police Headquarters. Press the button on the front of the box and speak to the dispatcher, who will immediately send an officer to your location.

Protect yourself and your property
In your room and around campus
- Always lock your door, even for a quick trip down the hall.
- Never leave books, bags, or purses unattended.
- Never lend your keys or leave them lying around.
- Don’t prop open exterior doors.
- Engrave valuables with a personal ID number. Engravers are available at University Police.
- If cards or checks are stolen, cancel them and file a report with University Police.
Walking and driving
- Avoid walking alone, and let someone know where you’re going.
- Stay out of dark, isolated areas.
- Walk with confidence and know your route.
- Have your keys ready before you reach the door or car.
- Always lock your car and check it before getting in.
- Never hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers.
