About the Clery Act
The Clery Act is a consumer protection law that brings transparency to campus crime policy and statistics. It requires colleges and universities to report campus crime data, support victims of violence, and publicly share the policies and procedures in place to improve campus safety.
Annual Security & Fire Safety Report
HUPD prepares this report with information from University Police, other University offices, and the Hampton Police Department. It includes three years of crime statistics and policies on drugs, alcohol, sexual assault, emergency notifications, and timely warnings. Notice of the report goes to every member of the campus community by email no later than October 1 each year. For a paper copy, call University Police at 757.727.5300.
Campus Security Authority training
Faculty, staff, and students who interact with students are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs), and the Clery Act requires annual CSA training. The training is a video that must be watched in full, followed by a certification of completion.
Clery Act reportable offenses
Hampton publishes three consecutive years of statistics for these crimes, using FBI Uniform Crime Reporting definitions, and forwards monthly incident-based reports to the Virginia State Police.
