Leadership
Chief Alfred S. Chandler Jr.
Chief of Police
Chief Chandler joined Hampton University in August 2026 with more than 24 years in law enforcement, most recently as chief of police for the City of Suffolk, Virginia, where he led nearly 200 sworn officers. He rose through the ranks in Suffolk, from police officer and detective to deputy chief, with assignments in criminal investigations, SWAT, crisis negotiation, and school resource officers.
At Hampton, his focus includes stronger relationships with students, faculty, and staff; investment in officer training; responsible use of data and technology; and greater preparedness, accountability, and community partnership.

Patrol Officers
State-certified police officers with full arrest powers, trained at the Hampton Roads Regional Academy of Criminal Justice and sworn through the Circuit Court of the City of Hampton.
Selected by the Chief
Investigations Unit
Officers chosen for their investigative skill, with added training through the Hampton Police Division. They take on felony and serious misdemeanor cases.

Security Officers
State-certified security officers who watch over residence halls, campus buildings, the main gate, and special events.

Telecommunications
The voices on the other end of every call and emergency call box, sending help to your location around the clock.
Two wheels, same mission
Bike Patrol
Officers on bikes reach walkways and green spaces a patrol car can’t, and meet the community up close.
Mon to Fri, 7:30 to 4:30
Traffic Administration
The office that registers vehicles, issues HUID cards and parking permits, and handles citations and appeals.
