Vehicle registration, parking decals, HUID cards, citations, and appeals, all in one place.
Traffic Administration Office
The Traffic Administration Office is in Police Headquarters at the rear of Whipple Barn. It handles vehicle registration, Hampton University ID cards, appeals of traffic violations, and temporary parking permits. Copies of the parking rules and regulations are available at the office.

Registering your vehicle
All cars, trucks, and motorcycles owned or operated by students, faculty, or staff must be registered with the Traffic Administration Office. Enforcement of current decals begins on the first day of classes each semester, including summer sessions.
Faculty and staff bring
- Valid driver’s license
- Current vehicle registration
- Current University ID card
- Faculty and staff decal: $120
- Reserved: $155
- Adjunct: $120
- Each additional decal: $20
Students bring
- Valid driver’s license
- Current vehicle registration card, in your name or an immediate family member’s
- A notarized letter if your last name and home address differ from the owner’s
- Validated University ID card
- Resident students need at least 60 completed credit hours
- Student decal: $100 per academic year
- Each family member who works or studies at Hampton registers separately and pays the full fee.
- Lost, stolen, damaged, or transferred decals are replaced for $5.
- The registered owner is responsible for all violations issued to that vehicle.
- Unregistered vehicles will be towed at the owner’s expense.
- Falsifying a registration carries a $100 fine and further disciplinary action.
- If your information changes, email hupdtraffic@hamptonu.edu right away to avoid fines.
Paying a citation
Traffic violations are no longer placed on your student account. Pay online, or pay at the cashier’s window in Whipple Barn and bring your receipt and citation copy to Traffic Administration.
Three unpaid citations
Three unpaid University traffic citations will result in the loss of your decal and campus parking privileges for the rest of the academic year.
Appealing a citation
The Traffic Control Committee Appeals Board reviews appeals and does not include Traffic Office employees. It includes representatives from Residence Life and Judicial Affairs, faculty and staff, and the SGA. Appeals are submitted online, you’ll be notified of the decision by email, and the Board’s decision is final unless significant new evidence is submitted.
- Buying a permit means agreeing to follow University parking rules.
- Not knowing the regulations isn’t grounds for appeal.
- A permit doesn’t guarantee a space, and a full lot doesn’t justify a violation.
- The permit holder is responsible for citations, no matter who was driving.
Visitors
Visitors can pick up a one-day VISITOR pass from the security officer at the main gate, at Tyler and E. Queen Streets. Display it on your dashboard and park in a marked visitor space. Misuse can result in a wheel immobilizer on the vehicle.
