Hampton University has appointed Alfred S. Chandler Jr. as chief of police. Chief Chandler brings more than 24 years of law enforcement experience and most recently served as chief of police for the City of Suffolk, Virginia, where he led nearly 200 sworn officers and 56 civilian employees.
In Suffolk, he expanded body-worn camera use, introduced de-escalation and use-of-force training, launched a mental health initiative, opened the department’s first dedicated training facility, and grew community programs such as Coffee with a Cop. He rose through the ranks there, serving as police officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, and deputy chief.
Chief Chandler holds a Master of Science in criminal justice from Saint Leo University and completed the FBI National Academy, the West Point Leadership Course, and the Command Institute for Law Enforcement Executives. At Hampton, his priorities include stronger relationships with students, faculty, and staff; officer training and development; responsible use of data and technology; and partnerships across campus and the surrounding community.
HUPD also thanks former Chief David Glover for 15 years of leadership and service to the Hampton University community.
